I have a new laptop, and I've managed to get it to see it in AMM, but I can't seem to get rid of the old computer (I still use it for specific tasks). Do I have to uninstall Ask My Media from the old computer to avoid having to keep saying my laptop is default computer? I've deleted the old computer in AMM but it doesn't stick.

Yep - you need to uninstall My Media from the old computer (assuming it's still running), otherwise it will reappear on the server list.
