Proper Use of Overrides?

Post by rcrawley »

I'm afraid I don't really understand how the Overrides feature is supposed to work. Here's an example: MyMedia can never figure out how to play the album "Third" by Portishead. Any combination will result in one of the following responses:
  • "I can't find the album third" (or some derivation of that error)
  • It will start playing the album "Portishead" by "Portishead"
  • It will start playing the album "Back to Front, Oct 3rd, 2013" by Peter Gabriel
No matter what I try I can't get it to work. So short of creating a playlist just for this album I thought I'd try Overrides. But no matter what I enter they aren't saving. I've tried mapping the album name "third" to "third", I've tried mapping a playlist called "third" to the Portishead album Third, I've even tried mapping the word "taco" in every field to this album, but nothing is saving or seems to be working.

It's kind of funny but also a bit frustrating that it can't find a simple album, and that I can't get Overrides to work properly. Thoughts? Suggestions? I just upgraded to the latest version for Mac, 1.3.104.0, and it does seem to be stuck in a queued rescan (at least for the past 30 mins), so maybe that has something to do with it?

Thanks!

The easiest way of using overrides is to look in the bottom right hand pane of the My Media Web Console dashboard. This will show you what Amazon sent My Media as the interpreted request.

Then click the university hat and the left hand side of the override will be prepopulated based on what Alexa heard. Then on the right hand side you enter how you want that to actually be searched.

I think in your case, Amazon is sending third through as '3rd' and this is not matching with the album name.

Can you send a screen shot of the bottom right pane of the dashboard after requesting the Third album please?

Thanks for the "graduation cap" tip, I never noticed that icon before. Unfortunately it doesn't look like they're saving. I'll click on the cap next to "3rd", enter "Third" for Override with Album Name "Third", click OK, head over to the Overrides (Beta) menu and the overrides list is empty.

One other thing I just noticed: in the Alexa app on my phone it correctly shows "Alexa heard: 'ask my media to play the album third by portishead'" when it played the album Portishead. So it seems to be hearing it correctly as it spelled out the word third.

Here's a screen cap of what Alexa hears and plays when I request Third:

Here's a cap of adding a new Override:

...and a cap of the Overrides window after adding Third:

Thanks for the help and the details on what MyMedia is hearing!

It looks like 1.3.108.0 fixed the missing overrides issue. Thanks for the update! :D
