Watch folders constantly scanning

Post by claxton »

Hi, I'm running iHomeServer v3.1.71.0 and a Windows 7 64bit machine and my watch folders are constantly "adding media to iTunes" if I have it set to anything other than manual scanning. Is this normal behavior now? My files are constantly be updated and indexed. Even when I do a trigger scan in manual mode, I still get like 300+ "adding media to iTunes" when I'm only adding a single movie. Any ideas??

Nope this is certainly not normal. Suggests one of the timestamp fields in the files is changing somehow.

If you can zip and email us the logs, I can try to work out why the scans are taking place.

You can find information on how to find the logs here - http://www.bizmodeller.com/iHomeServer/ ... _files.htm

Okay thank you. I have zipped the logs you requested and sent them to the support email. Please let me know if there is anything else I can help with.

I am having the same issue. If the Watch Folder is set on "Automatically Detect Changes" it scans constantly having found changes. In a folder with 50 movies it reimports around 45 then rescans and re-imports the same ones. It does this constantly. It will also do the same if it is set on Manual Scan and a Scan is initiated. The same 45 will import.

It only does it when the Watch Folder settings is forcing "Movie" (Not "TV Show") and it only does it when the "Force 'Home Video' to 'Movie" is checked. It does not keep flagging files as changed if the Force Home Video is unchecked.

It's also noteworthy that my files are stored on a NAS (Linux-based) and not on the machine itself. I have, however, synced times on both devices to NTP, so it's not a time drift issue (Although that should certainly be taken into account in the software if it isn't already.)

@claxton: Thanks for the log files. There is something odd going on. The file modified timestamps keep changing and that's what's triggering the scan.

Now, iHomeServer/iTunes certainly can change timestamp when updating metadata or changing video categorisation (which sounds similar to Brynnan's description), however, in your case, there is nothing in the log files at the modification time that suggests iHomeServer is initiating the change.

Taking SAW II as an example, we get the following change notifications. The "last write time" field is the modification date:

iHomeServer.log.2:21/10/2014 15:33:15.858 6092:0 11 Adding \\[SERVER]\Movies\Saw II_HD.m4v (PROPERTIES: last write time = 10/21/2014 2:48:35 PM created time = 12/11/2012 9:00:20 PM bytesize = 5732436423)

Couple of things to test:

1. Can you see the modification date changing in Windows Explorer? Looks like it's happening approximately every half an hour.
2. If you temporarily uninstall iHomeServer, or just stop the iHomeServer Windows Service, then does the modification date of the files continue to change (maybe leave it an hour if you're seeing it reliably changing every 30 minutes or so).

If not, then something else on your system is updating modification time stamps, perhaps antivirus or something similar?

Let me know how you get on,

@Brynnan - if you could send me your logs then I can look for something similar too? Thanks.

I'm curious as to if Claxton's data is on a NAS and if that is a contributing factor. And like I said in my post, You can leave "Detect Changes" set, and uncheck the "Home Video to Movies" option and the action stops.

I'll send my logs.

@Brynnan - thanks for the logs. The date range of the logs is from Oct 15th to Oct 25th. Did you experience the issue during this time frame because I can't see any movie being added multiple times within the logs? If not, please could you re-enable 'force movie to homevideo' and send me another set of logs when it's constantly adding the 45 movies back in?

Also - could you give me an example movie filename please of one of the 45?

TIA

I am experiencing the same issues that are reported here. I had to restore my Movies files from backup. Ever since restoring the files, iHomeServer is constantly scanning the Movies folder. The file 'Date Modified' is constantly updating to the current time as the files are scanned by iHomeServer. If I stop iHomeServer the file date modification stops. As soon as I start iHomeServer again, the scanning recommences and the Date Modified changes. It would seem the issue is directly attributed to iHomeServer.

ok - really want to find the root cause of this. Please could you zip and send us your log files to support [at] bizmodeller.com so we can take another look?

What are your Watch Folder settings for this - specificaly, do you have AutoTag or Force Media type set?

I have emailed the log files as requested. It may be worthy of note that the 'Force Media' type set was selected when this issue was happening. I have since deselected the Force Media option and the watch folder scanning has stopped. I have since added a new film to my collection and it has been added to the 'Home Videos' section of iTunes.
